Uncle Joe… It’s Time to Go
This morning the New York Times called on President Biden to step aside. “His candidacy is a reckless gamble,” wrote the Editorial Board. If you’re a Democrat and a liberal, and the Times turns against you, you should know that’s deep trouble.
The President can take a lesson from Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Justice Ginsburg was encouraged to retire during the Obama Administration. Had she listened to that advice, her replacement undoubtedly would have been her virtual clone, who would have carried on her legacy for another 25 or 30 years. Instead, she held on, until death played its hand. That got her a few more, illness-plagued years on the high court. It got America Justice Coney-Barrett, in so many ways Ginsburg’s antithesis.
I count myself among RBG’s countless admirers. My admiration, however, is tempered by the sadness and anger that her pigheaded determination to hang onto power stirs in me. What else can you call it except a selfish reluctance to relinquish the exceptional power enjoyed by a Supreme Court Justice? Surely, no matter how large her ego had grown down the decades, she didn’t believe that she had no equal among possible replacements.
Likewise, Uncle Joe Biden can’t honestly believe that no other member of his party can do as good or a better job than he, during the next four years. No, it can only be a similar reluctance to relinquish the White House that leads him down the path he’s trying to take. And I would have supported him. So, probably, would enough other voters to nudge him across the finish line ahead of his opponent.
Thursday night changed all that.
The only good thing about the debacle is that it happened early enough… but just barely The Democratic Convention is in mid-August. There is a window of opportunity… open now… but closing quickly.
Not since 1960 have the Dems seen a real convention tussle. One is long overdue. We have a Vice President and half a dozen competent, popular governors, any one of whom would make a better candidate than our Uncle Joe.
For this to happen under the party’s rules, Joe Biden has to make the first move. He’s posturing as if that’s out of the questions. But is it?
I am among those who hope it’s not. The alternative is too frightening for me to comfortably contemplate.
